Reading Week: 8 to 14 September 2020

Books play a significant role in our life. It is said “When you open a book, you open a new world”. It is very rightly said that Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary. To encourage our students to read more and to inculcate the love for reading, NPS Whitefield, Bangalore celebrated its First Annual “Reading Week” from 8-14 Sep,2020.

The students from Nursery to Class 8 participated with great eagerness in the varied activities planned for them, as part of the Celebration.

D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) activity was conducted across all the grades from 1 to 8. To inspire the students to read, a video about the reading habits of Bill Gates and Warren Buffer was shown. Students spoke giving glimpses of the books they read following the Reading Activity.

The children Class 1and 2 read storybooks of their choice. They spoke about the characters they liked best, what they thought would happen next and what they would have done in that situation. The children designed and created colourful ‘Bookmarks’, few decorated them with pictures and patterns, while others had their favourite story images. Hearing the narration of a story with fluency, accuracy and good expression is yet another way to promote interest in Reading. Puppet Show on ‘Gajpati and Kulpati’ had the desired result.

The activity for Class 3 students was ‘Light, Camera and Action’. The children enacted their favorite characters from a book they had read. They took on different roles, that of directors, actors and script writers. The short videos they created were truly amazing!

‘Twisted Tales’ was the activity for Class 4 students. The children read a book of their choice, paraphrased the book but gave a different ending to the story, their imagination at play!

‘Let creativity Flow Through Caricature’ was the activity the children of Class 5 had. The activity required them to summarize, illustrate and depicted the stories they had read through different ways; Comic Strips, Concept Maps and Stick or Warli Painting. The large range of titles given to the stories, showed that each child was unique in their thinking.

There was palpable excitement in the air as the students of class 6 got ready for their activity “We Are the World; We Are the People” The class was filled with lively literary characters as the students switched on their videos presenting their costumes dressed as their favorite literary characters. Amidst many Harry Potters and Hermiones, there were surprising entries of Sportsmen, Dr. Abdul Kalam and Rani Lakshmi Bai also. Creative props, exciting magic tricks and impassioned speeches made the event colorful and mystical.

The children of Class 7 had fun fashioning their activity ‘Beyond the design’. Creativity in designing were at the fore, the activity saw the children integrating Art with Literature and the result was astounding! Writing the blurbs for the books they read, had them working on their writing skills.

The students of Class 8 explored the magical world of Classics and expressed their appreciation for books in the form of a Power point presentation activity, Book Review- ‘A Literary Treat’. It was almost like a Team Building Activity and brought out their collective talents and the end product was delightful.

“Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are”.
